Dear Families,

I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself and express my excitement about working with your child this year. 23 years ago I was hired in Cattaraugus Little Valley.   I told the interview committee that I would love to teach 6^th grade Social Studies someday.  Well, now, many twists in the road later, that’s exactly what I'm teaching!  And, what a crazy time in the world to have the honor of considering communities, civilization, enduring challenges and issues, and what role geography, history and education plays in society.  Many of you know that I have worked as both a reading specialist and a classroom teacher over the years.  With my Master's in Reading I'm passionate about teaching kids to be learners and to be fully engaged through reading, writing, and discussion.   What many of you may not know about me is that my first bachelor’s degree was in philosophy!  (yes, my father did ask what I would ever do with that degree:)    Well, now I can happily report that background comes in quite handy.   And, as we face these uncertain and changeable times,  helping students navigate that is a huge undertaking but will be well worth the journey.   My own children graduated from highschool during the pandemic and are now working on figuring out adulting.   That too is quite a journey!  

I believe students will grow and develop by examining the cultures, history and locations we cover in class this year.     In addition to learning about current and historical events, students will be sharpening their skills of critical thinking, writing, and reading contemporary sources through this course. 

Additional information about 6^th grade Social Studies, as well as class expectations, are provided in the course outline.   This outline and other helpful materials, studies guides, assignments, and due dates will be posted throughout the year on the class website.    Also, again this year, Attendance and grades can be viewed at anytime through the Power School Parent Portal.
